A new study that was conducted by the University of Berkeley and the Clinica de Salud del Valle Salinas, showed that taking even a brief break from a variety of cosmetics,

shampoos and other personal care products can lead to a significant drop in the level of chemicals that disrupt hormone present in the body.
The findings were published in the journal “Environmental Health Perspectives”. The research was conducted among 100 teenagers of Hispanic nationality. They received various personal care products that are labeled as “free of the usual chemicals”, including phthalates, parabens, triclosan, and oxybenzone.
These chemicals are used regularly in almost all conventional personal care products such as cosmetics, soap, sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner and other hair products, so the animal studies have shown these products can directly affect the endocrine system of our body.

COSMETIC PRODUCTS

Women are the biggest users of many personal care products and they are disproportionately exposed to these chemicals, stated the lead researcher Kim Harley, associate director of UC Berkeley Center for Environmental Research and Children’s Health. This study stresses that young girls are especially exposed to this risk, because they are in time of rapid reproductive development and they use cosmetic products even more than adult woman do.

RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH

After only three days of research on girls who used cosmetic products without too many chemicals, urine samples showed a significant drop in the level of chemicals in the body.
Methyl and propyl parabens that are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetics fell to 44-45 percent, metabolite diethyl phthalate, commonly used in perfumes, dropped by 27 percent, both triclosan and benzophenone-3 dropped to 36 percent.
The study authors were surprised to see an increase in two less common parabens, but these levels were small and it is possible that it is caused by accidental contamination from chemicals not listed on the labels or from accidental change of products. This research was conducted to create awareness among people about everyday products they are using. The results of the study show that choosing products with less chemicals and making difference between cosmetic products can make dramatic changes.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Make sure to check the labels on all products you buy. Most personal care products contain ingredients list, but unfortunately, many of them don’t.
If you use a particular brand that you really like, you can try contacting the manufacturer directly and ask them for a list of ingredients.
You can also choose more natural and organic products, but always have in mind that words “natural” and “organic” are often meaningless in this industry. Natural and organic products can be a bit more expensive, so you can always go for creating your own. You can create a wide range of personal care products with just a few ingredients. It is cheaper and you will always know what you put on your body.
